UP had two corporate jets in Charlotte, NC this weekend. Probably a boondoggle of some sort, like the Panthers/Saints game. Neatly, UP's tail numbers are N844UP and N845UP. [Photo from RobsBlogs at robedgcumbe.com ] Note too how the flag is a match for what adorns their locomotives.
An interesting story involving a UP corporate jet: I was in a local train store back in about 1998 when I got to talking to a UP train engineer who was doing a little model train shopping. He was from San Antonio and laying over in Houston until taking a train back to San Antonio. He was involved in a head on collision between two UP trains in Houston in October of 1997. Something like five of the locomotives were completely destroyed. He and the other 3 crewmen had all bailed out before the impact so there were no fatalities fortunately. However he was put up in a local hospital for observation due to possible back injury. UP brought in one of their jets to fly him home after he was released from the hospital. They offered him a meal once on board but he did not feel like eating so had them box it so he could take it home and feed his dog. When he got home he opened it up and decided the steak dinner was way too good to feed the dog so heated it up and ate it himself. What a way to travel.
He theorized that they were treating him like a VIP to help avoid any Management/Union issues. There was a big investigation going on about the accident at the time.
Russell- I was not clear enough in my original post. I was actually referring to Hardcoaler's opener about the jets in Charlotte.
