The 9000 Class was designed with lateral motion on the #1 and #6 drivers, so they could shift 2" in either direction to accommodate tight curves without derailing. The Russians were so impressed with the 9000's design and ability that they built a 4-14-4 rigid frame locomotive in the mid-1930's. Unfortunately, the frame was just too long.
