I believe they are called "Trust Plates" and are attatched to rolling stock as a declaration of ownership by the organization shown on the plate. Lots of rail equipment is leased or financed in some way, and this shows who put up the $$$ for the equipment, and probably who you owe if you break it ! Bob C.
oldrk, Hello, again. Here's an example from a railroadiana site of a trust plate (older than I've seen) from "...a freight car." I remember hoppers and gons having them located on the car side at one end just beneath the top chord, and boxes and flats on the underframe. Another site cites this info "painted on" freight equipment. Am still looking for more definitive illustrations. Hope this helps,wether you're checking photos or metal. Bob C.
