I have a number of slides I have bought over the last few years I would like to get photos made from. anybody have any suggestions where to get this done?
Best I can suggest is to check at a proper camera shop. I'm not sure that the processing equipment at Walgreen's or the like is capable, but many of the shops can.
Or, you could buy a good slide scanner and color photo printer, scan them yourself and print them. I'm still not sure which method costs more. The folks in business to do this service charge a lot. Then again, ink for the color photo printer gets pretty expensive. I have done most of mine myself. Printing photos from my digital camera seem to be less costly at WalMart than on my color printer. It's a tough decision.
Well, the one I used was a Primefilm 1800u, but since then there have been big improvements, not only by Primefilm, but other manufacturers. I am not currently using any scanner, so I would suggest searching Google to see who is producing the good ones today. I think some produce digital images better than the many megapixel cameras.
I have an old Olympus ES-10 that requires an old computer with a parallel data port. You can do a search on Plustek OpticFilm 7400 and find a newer scanner that has USB. They can be had for around $160.
I would agree with this suggestion. If thinking of also getting these on a disk during the process, it might be well worth doing. It's usually a minimal additional cost. BUT, some places to read the disk require a proprietary software program, usually included, be installed on your computer just to read their disks. A rather stinky practice, as far as I am concerned. So be sure to ask about this wherever you take those slides.
I had a bunch of them done at Kits Camera. I think they charge $0.60 a slide scan and then put it on disk. I had to purchase the disk initially but everytime I go bakc and get more scanned they add the images onto the original disk.
Most cities still have good, old line processing specialists. There really aren't any national chains for this, so if I were to tell you that ours in Tulsa is KC, it wouldn't help you much. Ours isn't a camera shop per se; their specialty is developing, modification and such.
The writer of the original post said he wanted to convert slides that he BOUGHT. Are they copyrighted? I have had experience with some photofinishers who would not make prints, etc. from copyrighted slides without having written permission from the copyright owner.
In Longview Wn. There is photo express that can do the converting for you. It's a bit pricy at a dollar per slide but they do great work
You can capture the images using a PC scanner such as I use ( Canon 8800F) then take the images to Walmart to make photos. With free photo software you can enhance or clean up the images before printing. I use my scanner a lot scanning articles and documents I want to keep not necessarily in paper form. Scan all my documents for things like income tax, could not live without a scanner. My scanner will scan photos, slides and film negatives and paper douments. Good luck with your project.
A update on Photo Express. They have gone out of business and the store is empty. Not sure where i can get slides put on a photo CD now.
Since my old posts on this resurrected thread, I have purchased a Canon 9000F scanner, and am very, very happy with it. I have scanned prints, documents, slides, large film transparencies, and the results are just excellent.
Glad you got good results. I surprised my Mom a few years ago by upgrading her slides to pictures, and I'm pretty positive I did it at Walgreens.
I had a TON of mine scanned and digitized at Kits Cameras. I think they charged something like $0.60 an image.
