Oddly, I found it to be enjoyable to do it, mainly as it was fun to actually seem them all in larger dimensions than on the tiny little slide.

As far as I can tell, it's a Seaboard Coast Line ALCo. But seeing as all other identification has been painted out or removed, I can't say that for sure.

I'm not sure, but the unit was originally Macon, Dublin & Savannah 1703, then SAL 1689 after the SAL formally absorbed the MD&S and finally became SCL 1199. It was retired by the SCL on the same month that the slide was taken, 11/1972! These are such great shots! Having lived in AL once, I'm loving the Birmingham views and of course the EJ&E (the J ran by our house when I was young).
It might be possible then that it shows the loco post retirement being shipped off somewhere. It could explain the slightly out of place location.

On RR Picture Archives, there is another photo of this locomotive in the exact same spot with the exact same crew member (wearing the exact same shirt), which leads me to believe that whoever took this shot was out fanning with a friend.
Wish I had my data and references at hand. 1971 seems like it could be a bit early for that MILW ALCo chop nose.
It's possible that I've got the wrong date for the slide (and also that the date on the slide itself is incorrect).

A SF loco catching fire? In the 70's? Most likely! Keep this pics coming! That BLE bi-centennial unit sure is a memory stimulator! Being a teen then, I just had to have a Bi-centennial loco, and an Atlas SD-24 was the loco! Used that one for inspiration and painted it up for my fictitious route. Thanks for the memory!
