I am getting ready to move to the wiring phase of my layout and I have some questions. Is using a buss with feeders the best way to wire a layout even if it's DC only at this point? It's a large layout (20x40), 14 ga for the buss and 20 ga for the feeders?

I may or may not switch to DCC because I am more interested in the scenery aspect of the hobby and don't plan to host operating sessions. However I do want to have a trouble-free electrical system.

Using busses with feeders is the best way to wire a layout, period. It is the same with DC or DCC. On a layout your size, you really don't have a choice; if you don't use busses and feeders you're pretty much guaranteed to experience voltage drop and (later on) dead spots.

The discussion starts out a bit slow and that would be my fault...long winded. The information shared in this thread is applicable to your concerns. Then Bob and I get into a "I told you so" bantering about and having fun with the idea it works. You will find a number of posts by others discussing how DCC works, and what wiring works best. It will work with smaller wires but only on short runs...no more then two or three feet.

Quick overview: I use a 14 Gauge bus from my Analog DC Tranformers and DCC power supplies to my control panels. Everything on my layout has a DPDT (Double Pole Double Throw) toggle to control individual blocks. My drop wires are 20 gauge and I use 18 gauge wires for any runs longer then six feet.

The advantage to using DPDT electrical toggle switches, I can operate my locomotives that are still and most likely will remain Analog DC. Flip the toggles from Cab A to Cab B and I can operate my DCC locomotives. Cab B, is hooked up to the DCC power supply. Simple, a bit more work but it works just fine.

If you have a few minutes, do check it out. The thread has posts from other TB participants who share their thoughts, guidance and opinions.

Ecofreak? I hope that doesn't mean you are one of those tree huggers. Let's see maybe we could use a nick for you that is more rail..road friendly. Ahh, SteamerFreak. Yeah, I like the sound of that. Grin!
