For an old steam curmudgeon, I am actually beginning to identify some things diesel. Nice Black Widow paint job. Is that an Alco? An alligator?
Yup, a real RSD15 Alligator. Ex Santa Fe so naturally it has an SP paint job. And the ex SP F7s in Galveston get painted in Santa Fe scheme. Go figgure.
Fitz, Sorry to hear your interest in the darkside. You are way ahead of me in diesel knowledge. I never heard of alligato pertaining to trains before. Jim
Well, some of those early ALCOs are honorary steam engines. They smoked it up big, and like Hank mentioned, they were built in Schenectady, right along the New York Central mainline.
Nice Alco! It looks like it gave up smoking... No wonder the photo looks wrong! I have some of Dad's old photos of CPR RS18s and they smoked up a storm!
At the time I took that photo it was just sitting there "burbbling". When they throttled up to move it to the station to pick us up, it put out the required cloud of smoke. Sorry, I don't have any photos on my smart phone of that. I may have some on my regular camera that I can upload when I get home.
Jim, some Alcos were called "alligators" because they had an extra-long short hood that some folks said looked like an alligator's snout.
We were at the Temple depot when the Amtrak Texas Eagle stopped by yesterday. Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using Tapatalk
Here's some smoke, and the view over the 'snout', after seeing one in the flesh I appreciate the length of he nose.
Thanks for posting that one Alvin. I was too busy watching at that point and too dumbfounded to take a photo of all the smoke when it started moving. It was great to be able to meet you in person.
