How about some suggestions/techniques for both cutting and filling square windows on the sides of car bodies. What tools do you use? Steve E.
Micro-Mark sells a 3/16" Corner Punch, #82394. Useful for windows no smaller than 3/16". Accurate placement is necessary. I have trouble with accurate placement so I punch slightly inside the opening desired then finish with a modelers knife. Scraping with the edge of a modelers knife helps to get the final square corners. Ben
When using that tool it is also important to pre-drill a hole slightly smaller than the window in the center. That way the scrap has a place to go when you punch with the corner tool. Otherwise you can deform the rest of the car side. I also start by making a template out of sheet brass for the window and use that to scribe the outline into the car side with a sharp stylus before cutting anything. It is a little extra work making a template but it can be used over and over again and helps make all your windows the same size.
And the M300 can be had, used, at about the same price as a dozen or so diesels. The Micro-Mark punch is slightly less. I couldn't find a price for a new M300. They must be sold out. Ben
I use 1/16" styrene. Most window holes have and inside frame that need to be removed making the opening slightly larger. The, as stated before...#11 xacto knife. The plug should be set even or slightly higher than the body. Too deep and it's aproblem. A little high can be sanded smooth...........Example
Thanks Marty...I assume you use a styrene backing for the plugs? Gap filler Before sanding? Thanks again. Steve e.
Steve actually I try to make the plugs as snug as pssible. I use CA glue ang let it fill the gaps. When sanded you can't tell....
