My favorite 'ghost rairoad' would have to be the Newburgh, Dutchess & Connecticut Railroad that was located in Dutchess County, NY. The ND&C ran from Beacon, NY to State Line, CT from the later 1800s until 1938 (when it was torn up by the NH). My dad (an apple farmer) used part of the old right-of-way to get from one part of our farm to another and I always wondered what the railroad looked like in its heyday. Some of the stations are still with us as houses (and in one case a storage facility). The Hopewell Junction depot has been restored and will be used as a museum in the near future. I have several Ghost Lines that I love! The first being The Fonda Johnstown and Gloversville in Upstate, NY, The Saratoga & Schuylerville, also in Upstate, NY, The Little Falls and Dolgeville, ditto and last, but not least, The Springfield Terminal Railroad located in Springfield, Vt. It was a short line that connected Vermont and New Hampshire. It was originally electric power and then converted to a 44-tonner in the 1950's.
I had a thing for watching freight trains at speed,and for me in this area,there was no better place than to go south and see them on the RF&P.Don't know if it would classify as a shortline as much as a bridge line but it was fun to see those gp35's and gp40's flying up and down those well-maintained tracks.once the southbounds crested franconia grade, you couldn't keep up with them.
