I mostly stick to the n scale board, but I may just post a few questions here soon, as I will be attempting my first custom loco painting and decalling. I plan to do a pair of GP-7s in the purple scheme. The decalling seems a bit intimidating and I'm not sure about whether to do ACL or one of the related roads like Columbia Newberry and Laurens. Color reference photos are hard to come by. [ November 11, 2005, 09:50 AM: Message edited by: ACLer ]
Big ACL/SCL fan here. My free-lanced HO layout is influenced by it. i saw a picture the other day of a bunch of engines at the Progress rail facility in Waycross, GA one unit appeared to still be in the ACL/SCL Black and yellow paint
I'm still around. I'm mostly on the N-Scale and layout design boards. I've been a huge fan of the L&N/SCL/Family Lines system pretty much my whole life! Mike C Phoenix Az
I have a bit of curiousity about ACL and SAL. However, my only activity, is collecting train orders from these two companies. Boxcab E50
Am a big fan of the SAL, with ACL and SOU running a close second/third. Growing up two blocks from SAL's Charleston-Savannah main and with the ACL's Croghans' branch running right next to the house I grew up in, well, no chance of my not being a railfan. Am building a 10'x12' layout which will add a fictional 1/2 mile or so to Seaboards Charleston-Savannah main with interchange to a free-lance road owned half and half by ACL and SOU. Have employee TT's for the Charleston sub-division, would love to talk to anyone who has a handle on or knowledge of work rules apply-ing to this line.
Hi Dave, Welcome aboard! I don't know much about the work rules in that territory, but I have definately railfanned my share of the lines from Charleston north into North Carolina Harold
Hello Harold and other SAL/ACL/SOU fans (you can arrange that in any order you want). Perhaps we can begin to full out the area devoted to our "fallen flags". I would, of course, pick for my prototype, a fallen flag and a stretch of railroad gone for 38 years. Not that I haven't had an interest in the three lines since ~4 years of age. Southern at the time was a 10 or 25 cent bus fare and a transfer away from home. Saw very little of this line 'til my teenage years. Of course made it a point to go by the round-house in Charleston every chance I got.
Harold, the roundhouse was located between King and Meeting streets (west to east) and Line to Columbus streets (north to south) - the present day site of the Meeting street Piggly-Wiggly. Do not remember any steam, do recall green and white E's, F's, and RS's. Am old enough to remeber double-headed Q-3's on SAL fruit blocks.
06 Jan 2006 Good afternoon all. I am new to the forum, however not new to i/4 inch scale hi-rail modeling and the ACL, SAL and SOU RAILROADS. Good to be on board. SCRS
Hi Larry, Welcome Aboard! Refresh my memory... where is Mauldin? I am in Raleigh, on the "S" line. Harold
I did not know this about ACL. The Atlantic and Western Carolina was bought by ACL in 1897 and merged in 1959, but still had ACL purple engines as an ACL subsidiary. This is a very good list of engines and paint colors for modeling. Atlantic and Western Carolina
The other subsidiary mentioned, the Columbia, Newberry & Laurens also had their engines painted purple and silver with the CN&L lettering. Neither road used the ACL herald however. The only purple and silver engines I photographed (in the Champ Davis colors) were two CN&L engines leased to the ACL in ~1964-1965.
