OK Dave and others, lets move up the Southern Railway line from Charleston to Augusta to include the Augusta area.

My family moved to Augusta in 1953 where I finished the last two years of High School (A.R.C.). It was also here where I had my home address for the 20+ years while being employed with the USAF.

The Augusta area had many rail sites to see. The Georgia, Southern, C&WC / ACL, C of G, The Georgia and Florida and the old line to Edgefield.

Some of my favorites were The Augusta Union Station, the Southern's Savannah River bridge and its trains in the middle of the street, the C&WC / ACL's Savannah bridge at Sand Bar Ferry Road and the Georgia Railroad yard with its double track entry into the city.

Branchville, Denmark, Blackville, Aiken and the line from Aiken to Augusta all had their attractions.

Larry - Unfortunately have only been through Augusta twice, once at night, both times in summer '57.

Did at one time consider modeling the Georgia Group, especially the Georgia RR, the possibility of completely modeling its diesel roster was quite appealing.

This first link pretty well answers the question. :D

But that same page raises another question for me- Where was Miller Yard? I have looked over a couple Atlases, and the closest town I can seem to spot, is Castlewood. Is this close?

Boxcab E50 - Look out in far western Virginia for the towns of St. Paul and Dunganon - Miller yard is about halfway between these two. I think it was also the interchange between CRR and the Interstate RR before Southern took over the latter.

So, Miller Yard isn't really sited in any town? It's actually sort of out in the middle of nowhere?

Delmarvarailfan - Suggest that your next purchase be "Charleston & Western Carolina Railway" by Albert M. Langley, Jr. Last time I checked it was still listed as available from the ACL/SAL Historical Society, a group you might want to consider joining.

The C&WC is one of those interesting roads that, at least in the diesel era, you could model engine-for-engine.

As for interchanges between Augusta and Spartanburg these were (to the best of my knowledge):

    1. Spartanburg - Until 1963 Southern handled all of C&WC's interchange with Clinchfirield and the P&N.

    2. Laurens - With the CN&L.

    3. Greenwood area - Georgia & Florida (after 1963 Southern) and SAL.

    4. Augusta - Central of Georgia, Georgia, ACL, Georgia & Florida, and Southern.

As you probably know, C&WC diesels were painted in ACL's purple & silver but lettered C&WC and no herald. In October 1957 parent ACL began painting their units black with yellow trim subsidiary C&WC followed suit quickly afterward. As a note of interest, CN&L still had two GP-7's in purple & silver as late as Aug. 1964.

My second favorite and if I hadn't grown up between the SAL's "EC" line and a Coast Line branch - say vice versa, ACL might have been my favorite. Bu still a close second.
