Okay. Sunday. Haven't done anything. But I did take this picture of the area to be modeled. It is the Regal Plastics industry. The building there is a mock up. I still have to conceptualize. There will be a small shipping receiving area that connects to the road in the fore ground. This area is called "Joe Freeman," named for the Joe Freeman colesium area in San Antonio. There are about eight industries to be done here. The covered hoppers in place are from an earlier operating session.
Hey Flash, your "mockups' look better than my finished buildings!! You sure you don't want to send them this way when time comes for "recycling?"
Speaking fo which, here are the two scratch-built buildings I made this week. The black styrene isn't painted yet, so it's kinda hard to see all the flaws - come to think of it, maybe I should keep them that way! LOL The grain elevator and fuel rack from last week are visible in the background. [
well, this stinks.... mine has changed, i think.... i have decided to slightly re-do my yardthroat.... better now than later, but still, its gonna be a pain! oh well.... i'll keep you guys updated on the progress.
OK, I'll weigh in. In the next 6 weeks, I'll finally finish my version of the Walthers N scale 'Geo. Printing Company' (hope it ends up looking something like this): I will label it the 'Glendale Sugar Beet & Produce' company, as a standin for a large DPM-style sugar beet factory that was in Glendale, Arizona. This building will replace the small little plastic buildings on the lower left of my 4' x 4' layout below: It's about time, as the kit has been 1 year sitting on the shelf waiting for 'that time' to come! As you can tell from the shot below, it should look a lot better than the two existing stand-in plastic structures on right side of this photo: I will post soon some shots of the painting in progress. I see that the end of the 'Beach Blanket Layout Party' is the end of July. Gotta keep movin' on this project! [ 28. June 2004, 05:46: Message edited by: atsf_arizona ]
Well I finally got an image up so I can show my work area, aka mess. Please note this is a before picture. You can see the scenery coming in from the back and right. The area covered with junk in the photo is now empty and has homosote set down. I have some tricky track elevations to tie in and then I can lay some rail. doublt much will happen til after the convention at this point but there is a good start. Hope the image works
OK, I'm arriving fashionably late, but I'll jump in since I've already started working toward my goals. Despite my chosen moniker, I've started work on a free-lanced late 1800's Colorado railway, the Arapaho & Fire Creek. It's best described as a tortured doughnut, filling a 12x20 space in the basement. I've finished the framing around the wall and have the backdrop up (drywall with vinyl flooring coved corners). My goal is to paint the backdrop, install some sort of quick ceiling, and clear out the center of the layout room for benchwork. Currently it's piled high with my old layout and boxes of train stuff that hopefully will get built someday. So far I have my sky blue latex paint applied, all the major shapes drawn in with chalk, the mountains painted in acrylic, and the background color on for the aspen groves. I spent several hours this weekend with a white charcoal pencil putting half-inch lines in the background color to represent tree trunks. Next up is the foliage color, then I break out the green paint. I'll post again with progress as I make it!
Ok Gang here's a quick look at what I did the last two weeks. I still need to work on the left side of this yard but I will try and get another picture of the whole area
Hello all, Some progress... but didn't get my track order complete so I'm still a little up in the air on the final design. In the meantime, - built an ammuniton depot - practiced weathering! - weathered said ammo building - weathered a caboose and a couple old cars - evaluated digital cameras! (mine is 1.3 meg with no close up ability, any suggestions?) For weathering I tried the ink/alcohol wash to fairly good effect, eventually! My track is supposed to arrive Thursday, so this weekend will be final laying-out, then ramp building for the upper section. Then maybe some preliminary wiring. Have a good week all!
as a newbie to this hobby I decided to throw up a web page to follow my progress with my layout. it's at webpages.charter.net/quuee feedback with any suggestions or comments are always welcome! I have my benchwork put together (admittedly it's not very good but since I started this hobby without any skills in woodworking, wiring or anything else it will have to do hehe. I decided to not try to emulate hardcode prototype purists from the beginning since with my limited skills and knowledge I thought that might just be a source of fustration and keep me from continuing so I am just freelancing a layout (I am calling it Dwarf-Lines Railroad after my wife who everyone calls "The Dwarf due to her diminutive stature..hey it helped me sneak some more space for the layout hehe what started as a 3x8 layout is now a 4x8 by 2.6x8 layout). While I prefer the steam era I am considering setting it just far enough forward in time to run some of the older diesels (suggestions for older diesel motive power needed and welcome!).
Well I've got moving on benchwork, but on a much smaller scale. I realized that my grand empire for up in the attic was too much to bite off at the moment, and summer is finally heating up. Plus after looking around, the attic needs a little attention (noticed some water damage on the ceiling). So time for some roof repair, replace some insulation, and then new drywall/paint/etc. So... instead I've started on a little 3x5 made of some spare 2x3s i had laying around, as well as this sheet of I'm not quite sure what. Its the same material as pegboard, but without the perforations. We shall see what happens with it. Now I'm at the "what neat things can I do on this space" phase with some graph paper and a pencil.
Can't upload any pictures yet, but got the buildings roughed together, primer color on. I have LOTS of windows that need some attention, that's gonna be time consuming. Still working on good track arangement.
Last week was a total loss for me, with out of country family visiting and getting ready for two moves. Most likely the next two weeks will be goners, too, but I will try and squeeze in at least one more building...
Hi Guys: I am about 90% done with the yard I just need to paint the Mi jack and do some small detail work. As you can see I got all of my fascia work done Now I just need to paint it... I might pick up some of the small Rix buildings for a yard office. Any other ideas?????
Todd, Great pictures and a great looking layout. But a clean layout and a clean garage?? This is indeed a sign of a sick mind. Shannon WP LIVES (and so does the ATSF)
Looks Like UP Mike is the mad hatter compared to the rest of us. The couple of times I've tried to post the new sites been down and then there was the near two weeks at the train show, convention etc. I have been fusing with thetrack in the area since the roadbed is down. This area has a ton of switches and I actually need more that the 12 or so I've roughed in. Hopefully I'll get to a picture point by this coming weekend. Hope all you Atlas list refugees are doing well. Gnarly
Well finally, after a little stand still, I've gotten back to work on the layout. The outer loop of road bed is pretty much done, just have a last connection to make. I've started laying the track back down alone the back wall. I added a few pics to my RailImages album: http://www.railimages.com/gallery/mattmillican The first pic in the album is of my lumber yard office. I finally painted the top trim of the building yesterday. I still have a little touch up to do on the yellow, and my dad is going to do the window trims and what not.
Yea, sorry about that. I've been so backed up with other sites that I'm doing that I haven't had much time to work on my own sites . I am slowly getting it done though. Matt
