Jet CA is the brand I use to build RC airplanes back in the days before foamies took over. It was the best CA that I've ever used bar none. BTW, it's available on Amazon.
It would have been better if i had used the right glue to put the building together with. I got enough to build the layout over again. The river is next. Its in bad shape.
I used Mod Podge before with my earlier layouts and this one came out different. I set a can of air on the river and the can sunk into the river. I am also having a hard time getting the grasses off the logs and water in the moat at the sawmill. Not sure what i can do but use a toothbrush on the moat to get as much of the grasses off the water and logs. I am going to try and cover where the can made its mark to see if will blend in or show through the gloss. I might try and get it to level and then add paint to the water and then re-coat it to see if it will blend in. Got to try something. Shots below, Smoke
Its slow going. But i am winning over the groves that were showing up.I am working on fill number 3 now. and it is disappearing slowly. And after cleaning the river with a tooth brush and water i am getting a clear coat to make it shine again. The dust is going away with the toothbrush and water and a thin coat of Mod Podge is making it shine again. I am wondering what to coat over the Mod Podge itself. One of my friends seems to remember using a Acrylic coating to go over the Mod Podge. Am trying to find out what he used.
The acrylic coating is Future Floor Wax. It's no longer available under that name though. Read this thread. I think the new name is available on Amazon and probably at your local supermarket. https://forum.ipmsusa3.org/topic/24438-substitute-for-future-floor-wax/
Well, i went with this from Hobby Lobby had to order it as they don't stock it. Should be here in a few days. Liquitex acrylic gloss medium
While i was waiting i did some repairs on the logging cars. These little 25 footers really had a bad time in the boxes. Enter ca glue to the rescue!! i have the 5 empty and 5 loaded cars for the logging line. Shots below Smoke
I got the marks on the river to dissolve and i got it cleaned and in some places painted. I added more rock to it and am getting ready for the big pour behind the dam. It drys and i can add the Acrylic to it. Shots below, Smoke
The rapids are something i changed my mind on. I added them and have been adding more to it. I wanted to have a waterfall back when i started this layout. I have one but its small and covered by train bridges so its not all that visible. I need to add more white so the rapids show up better. The area behind the dam is high water so no rapids. I need to get behind the layout so i can get a good pour back at the trestle area. Thats a pain with clearance. Got to be done..
Ran out of podge so to the store i went. Now i have the upper part off the river poured. There is a spot i may have to fix. I poured the last of the old jug and i poured the new together and there seems to be a seam there where i changed bottles. I hope it will smooth out on its own. I may have to do something with it later. I want to put a boat or two on that part with a couple of fisherman in them. Thats the plan... Shots below, Smoke
Last evening while i was behind the layout i picked two trees to "cut down". I got my men on the saw and set up the scene. They are so small its hard to get a picture of them. Even with a tripod they are not in sharp focus The shot below is the best of the 5 shots. I tried... Smoke
I am ordering another one for the tree. Its a man climbing a tree with tools to top the tree and cut limbs off.It should be here by the end of the month at the latest Have a shot of it. I would have ordered it at the same time but didn't see him at the time. Its on order
I have another idea for the main line while the river is drying. I was looking at my fleet of cars for the layout and i have more than enough for another train and i have the engines to do it with. The question is where to you make a pass a round or sidings to help different main line trains to get around each other. Of the biggest areas the mountain with the town houses on it has a rather large open area for a passing siding. I can fit a pair of #6 turnouts under there with a passing track of say R15 curves and it would be long enough for say a 10 car train. I know some will chew me out for wanting to put switches under the mountain. That mountain is accessible from the front and back side of that mountain. The mountain under the logging camp isn't big enough and i am using R11 in that tunnel so the other side is the only area i have to move trains around each other. I have some old passenger cars that could make a train and more freight as well. shots below. Is it a real bad idea? Its the best i can think of for now.
It's a good idea if you like it! I like to see a train passing another, so it might not be such a good idea for me. Note, you don't have to use it for just passing, but maybe a little slight of hand: one train enters the tunnel, and a different one comes out the other side!
I had thought about the one train enters a different train comes out. I am also waiting for one on the big trestle and another train under it too. Thats coming up later this year, i hope. Thanks!
