I'm here! Well I live here so it's hard to not be unless the real railroad has me out of town. I do have this entered in the model contest so check it out! Wish me luck in my first ever model contest! Russell straw and I will be battling it out with a few other contestants! Entry #22 abd I'm not sure what number Russell's decapod is.

I have 3 brass 2-10-4's and 4 brass 2-10-2's in ATSF and never seen that turtleback tender before. Is that also from the Bachmann 2-10-2?

No, that's cut out of a piece of mdf wood by hand. It's completely scratch built. [IMG][IMG]

    That's a beautiful model.

Why did the SF use Turtle Back tenders? It looks like the amount of water would be greatly reduced compared to standard box tanks.

Just got word and confirmation that the 2017 NSE convention will be in Pittsburgh at the Sheraton Station Square hotel This a great spot with the Old P&LE passenger station and freight house shops, CSX running on one side and NS running on the other, river boat tours plus the incline and light rail all within walking distance.

I could be wrong and I hope that if someone knows the answer that they will chime in here but I suspect that when these steamers were built the tender was actually quite large compared to other ones that they had at the time. I believe that later on the tenders were replaced with others.

When delivered the locomotives were 3000 class 2-10-10-2's - delivered in 1911. ATSF split them apart in about 1915 to 1918.

On the tenders, from what I understand, the original assignments of some of the 2-10-2s required a lot of reverse running- the tender was shorter than most and vision was much better as a result. I do think Jerry is right, at the time, the capacity of the tender was comparable to more standard types. Somewhere I have the MR or RMC with drawings, but still sorting through everything after the move a couple months ago.

These tenders were designed for the 3000 class 2-10-10-2s. After an unsuccessful service, the engines were turned into 2-10-2s. These tenders were great for helper service and long reverse runs down Cajon pass in helper service. If I remember correctly the 2-10-10-2s were originally designed for use on the pass as helpers hence the tender design.

So other than a couple Santa Fe steam engines and stuff announced by N Scale Kits, is there anything else going on?
