I wonder how many sound decoders are installed? If there is one in each part, the engine and the B unit, I may spring for one just for fun and use it to see how multiple sound decoders are implemented.
Apple's to Apple's, modern era is by far, produced more than transition era has ever thought with at least good tooling. Sure we have transition era cars with 30 year old tooling. This is my first year attending the Nscale National Convention and I am thrilled to be here in Overland Park/Kansas City. There is so much (model train and yummy barbecue) to take in. It's great to see well-crafted and in some cases, unusual, train layouts (could not help but marvel at the guitar case layout...this takes portable to a whole new level). It's also nice to meet fellow train enthusiasts. I already met several TB members....Brian...Nice to put a face to a Forum moniker. It's also nice to get first-hand information on new products (love the colorful nscale trash trucks from Stone Creations) and chat with train manufacturers. And of course, I can't forget all the swag. Not sure if my Convention pin clashes with my Convention shirt (with its multitude of logos). This was a brief topic of conversation during dinner last night on the Kansas Belle dinner train...the jury is still out... There is so much going on here...just thought I would share some highlights. I don't know what transition modelers have to complain about, we got a stock car that goes moo..... But seriously... As a transition era modeler, I am inclined to say that things are actually pretty good for us, its just there was not much in the way of new announcements at this particular show. Between the Bluford hoppers, more MT heavyweights, K-4s, M1s (ok, I don't need PRR steam, but it does make the Pennsy guys happy, and quieter) and lots of other stuff, we've actually seen a lot lately. And looks like Kato is bringing a Rocket soon, and there may be other surprises. The tooling is already out there for lots of nice freight cars (not just the 30 year old tooling, but lots in the last few years from Atlas, IM, Bluford, etc)- overall, I think those of us in the WWII-1960 era are in pretty good shape. Especially given how few of us are left who actually passenger trains that did not have "Amtrak" written on the sides, and even fewer who ever saw a steam locomotive in revenue service for a major Class I in the US. Not that I don't want to see some ATSF steam, ever more passenger cars, and maybe, someday, a Baldwin road switcher. Had hoped someone would release some new big buildings for downtowns and big industries (maybe a steel mill re-release). Maybe next year.... Tom D.

If you are talking about the UP turbine. The engines just had the turbine in the B unit, the A unit had a small diesel for movement around servicing. Would be neat to go between the turbine and diesel sounds to represent servicing and mainline operation. Dan
On the write up, looks as if the decoders will have prototypical sounds in each unit. Diesel in A and turbine in B.

Nope! Actually I don't think there was anything really new announced in the way of locomotives. The UP turbine was announced the week before at the NSE and the Bachmann 2-8-0 is not a new locomotive they just added sound to it. Bachmann did the 2-8-0 before in DCC with no sound. The Fox Valley GP60 has been a poorly held secret for a while now. Very little in N scale .Not much written up about the convention, at least on the N scale boards.
I was excited about the FVM GP60s, until I found a Walthers GP60 for $25 at the show one table over. I added additional details ( brake hoses, MU hoses, separate cut levers, separate grab irons, see-through fans and blades on top, etc.) and added a LokSound Select Micro with Sugar Cube speaker, so unfortunately, I probably will not be getting a FVM one. We'll see though. For less than $100 I got a great-running GP60 with better details, DCC and SOUND, right now.
