I wouldn't mind seeing the MKT unit in either the original red scheme (think the Fs and PAs) or the Barriger red scheme (please God, not the dull Deramus abomination). As for Zito Yellow.........
Beats me Martyn, but there also was a former California Zephyr car, in CB&Q subscript also in the train, Silver Larch as I recall.
Hemi, I seen the cars and engines when they were at the UP depot. there was a pennsylvania bud, and a bunch of green pullman cars that said St.Louis car co. on them
The SP Heritage Unit is finally out. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/pictures/6215/8%209%202005%20016.jpg
True heritage = using the old SP maintenance shops to recreate that unique effect. Kudos to to the graphic artists on that one!
As per the MKT scheme- if the depiction I saw on a T-shirt worn by UP steam engineer Lyn Nystrom is any indication, the Katy rendition will be a combination of Barringer red and Sloan lettering (as in "The Katy" in script). BTW, he got that shirt in Omaha at the official unveiling of the first two heritage units. On the shirt, the MP unit is in all-Jenks Blue, while the real diesel is, of clurse, not. But, IIRC, pale blue was part of the original MP paint scheme back in the day when the Fs and Geeps first came out......
Well, I got hold of an email that may shed some light. > From: Union Pacific Heritage Team > To: John Doe Graphics Company > > Subject: Painting of M-K-T Heritage Locomotive > > Gentlemen: > In response to your correspondence dated May 17 concerning colors on the > locomotive, our research department has identified several colors we would > like to have incorporated into the M-K-T locomotive design. We want the > locomotive to proudly display the colors of the M-K-T railroad diesel > era. Back in April we provided you with information pertaining to the well > known red, green and yellow color. Those choices of colors remain. > > Our research staff has since uncovered other colors that must be included > to properly honor the heritage of the M-K-T. These colors are listed below: > * Kennecott Copper Yellow > * Faded Penn Central Black > * Faded Illinois Central Orange - with special Rustoleum patch over area > where any new lettering will be applied > * Conrail Blue > > We fell it is important to include these extra colors to enable our > employees of M-K-T heritage to properly identify their locomotive. > > > Sincerely, > > The Heritage Team at UP
Okay, I'll admit to looking at the pics of the W.P. Heritage Scheme every few days. It's not as yuccky as my first impression said it was. And they did put the Feather River Route insigne on it. Also big thank yous to all the folks making it possible for us to see them here.
Windle beat me to it! What a sweet scheme! I have no knowledge whatsoever of Katy schemes, so this one look OK to me. I'll let the MKT purists voice their comments first..
The colors appear to be from the first streamlined Texas Special diesels. They had the red on top with the maroon along the pilot fuel tank and skirts. The maroon only lasted a few years before it disappeared. The star on the nose appears to be silver like the original. I guess the striping is kind of a tribute to the Green & Yellow "John Deere" stripes.
